Most children grow up in homes where they are loved and well cared for. However, for a variety of reasons sometimes a child may be hurt or mistreated in a way that is likely to cause them significant harm. This can be a result of abuse and neglect.
The defence of reasonable chastisement, which allowed parents and carers to justify physical punishment of their child, was abolished under the Children (Equal Protection from Assault) (Scotland) Act 2019. All child protection contacts are taken seriously and your concerns will be properly considered by a qualified Social Worker.
You may be contacted for further information as part of the initial enquiries. In most cases, there will be a discussion with the parents and the child as appropriate.
Sometimes it becomes clear at a very early stage that concerns are not founded.
If initial enquiries do reveal significant concerns about the child or young person’s welfare, then the formal child protection enquiry procedures will begin immediately.
Child abuse is preventable not inevitable, it’s up to each of us to do everything possible to keep children safe by working together to get a clearer understanding on how we can best support them at the earliest opportunity.
